August's music coming in
BLOG
July 29th, 2010

It has been a very busy couple months for me, so I regret that I have been forced to break the rules and deliever late this month. I do admit that June's release was rushed and I'm not all that pleased with it. In my defense, I actually did complete a The Lottery - Parts 1 and 2 earlier this month, however the vocals are not completed yet. I believe it will see the light of day very soon.

In the meantime, I will be releasing something for July very shortly, so stay tuned.

March's release is called, "Night Sky." What if the night sky as you know it suddenly changed drastically? This music describes a world whose night sky has changed significantly in only a decade.

February's release is called, "Leaving." I'm releasing it a day early because I'm going to be busy tomorrow and the rest of the week. This song is about a group of travelers who have have been chosen to travel 20 light years to civilize a moon to preserve the human race. However, the guilt that these travelers feel for leaving so many behind is nearly unbearable.

A special thanks goes to Matt Ownby for donating his vocal talent to "Leaving." Expect to hear more from Matt in future releases. Matt just purchased the same music sequencing software that I have, so this should help us to improve further in the future.

I have added an option to allow you to provide your comments or constructive criticism. There is even an option to comment anonymously in case you have something not-so-nice to say. :)

I have successfully released my first piece called Visitor. So far, this plan for motivating myself is working!

Most of the music that I compose is inspired by simple things or weird stories that I have circulating in my head. January's piece is a representation of how even the simplest sounds in life can lead to something beautiful (or at least beautiful to me.) Like most people who write music, I only write music that I like to listen to. If a few other people like it as well, that is great, but my intent is not to write music that others like to hear. Is that selfish of me? Perhaps a bit.

I was actually able to complete two pieces this month. The original candidate for January is still in post-production, so I had to whip up Visitor real quick, but I should be able to provide the originally intended candidate for January in February or March. I am extremely pleased with this unreleased piece. In a way, it was inspired by the James Cameron film, Avatar.

How does one stay motivated to accomplish something? By committing! How does one stay committed? One way is to announce that commitment to the world, making it a lot harder to uncommit.

Therefore, I officially commit to creating at least one original piece of music by the end of each month in 2010. Whether I feel that the music is great or awful, I am required to come up with something. By the end of the year, I hope to have demonstrated some level of improvement of my ability to create original music.

The rules:

  • I must publish one new piece of music by the end of each month no matter how good or bad I think it is
  • If I finish before the 15th of the month, I must wait until at least the 15th to publish it. (ie: the earliest the new music will be released is the 15th of the month)
  • The music may either include or exclude vocals and I may or may not use guest vocalists

In the event that you decide to follow this project, allow me to warn you that I am not a professional musician, but a hobbyist. I have created a good number of original compositions in the past, but I have no formal training in music. The main purpose of this project is for my own personal growth and enjoyment.
